As winter slowly releases its grip, March welcomes the return of light, growth, and renewal. Buds appear on trees, birds grow louder in the morning, and the earth begins to awaken. This seasonal shift reminds us that our bodies and spirits also crave renewal.

In holistic traditions around the world, spring is considered the season of cleansing, nourishment, and balance. Just as nature sheds the heaviness of winter, we too can support our bodies in letting go of stagnation and welcoming fresh energy.

The Spring Equinox, which occurs around March 20th, marks the moment when day and night are nearly equal. It is a beautiful reminder that balance is not static - it’s a dynamic process of adjusting, renewing, and realigning ourselves with the rhythms of nature.

Equinox Wisdom: Honoring Balance

The Spring Equinox represents a perfect moment of equilibrium. Light and darkness meet in harmony, symbolizing a powerful opportunity for reflection and renewal.

For centuries, cultures across the globe have celebrated the equinox as a time to:

  • Release what no longer serves us
  • Restore balance between rest and action
  • Plant seeds—both literal and symbolic—for the months ahead

Just as the earth begins to bloom, this season invites us to cultivate balance in our own lives - physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Herbs of Spring Renewal

Early spring herbs are nature’s gentle helpers for awakening the body after winter. They nourish, cleanse, and encourage movement throughout the body’s systems.

Nettle: Mineral-Rich Nourishment

Nettle is one of spring’s most beloved nourishing herbs. Packed with minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium, and silica, it helps replenish nutrients often depleted during the colder months.

Traditionally, nettle is used to:

  • Support energy and vitality
  • Strengthen hair, skin, and nails
  • Provide gentle support for seasonal allergies
  • Nourish the body deeply with trace minerals

Think of nettle as springtime nourishment straight from the earth.

Dandelion: Gentle Detox Support

Often overlooked as a “weed,” dandelion is actually a powerful ally for spring cleansing. Both the root and leaves are used in herbal traditions.

Dandelion supports the body by:

  • Encouraging healthy liver function
  • Supporting digestion
  • Acting as a gentle diuretic
  • Helping the body release built-up stagnation

Spring’s first dandelions are a reminder that healing plants are often growing right at our feet.

Cleavers: Lymphatic Movement

Cleavers are one of the first herbs to appear in early spring, and they’re especially known for supporting the lymphatic system—the body’s internal drainage and immune network.

Traditionally, cleavers help:

  • Move lymphatic fluid
  • Support detoxification
  • Reduce seasonal congestion
  • Encourage gentle cleansing of the skin

Fresh cleavers are often used as teas, infusions, or blended into smoothies during the early weeks of spring.

DIY Spring Tonic: Lemon & Nettle Infusion

One of the simplest ways to welcome spring into your routine is with a refreshing herbal tonic.

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon dried nettle leaf
  • 1 cup hot water
  • Juice of ½ fresh lemon
  • Optional: raw honey to taste

Instructions

  1. Place nettle leaf in a mug or jar.
  2. Pour hot water over the herb and cover.
  3. Let steep for 10–15 minutes.
  4. Strain and add fresh lemon juice.
  5. Sweeten with honey if desired.

This tonic offers a mineral boost, gentle detox support, and a bright spring flavor that awakens the senses.

Holistic Practices for Spring Renewal

Spring herbs work best when paired with mindful practices that reconnect us to nature and our bodies.

Barefoot Grounding

Walking barefoot on grass or soil allows the body to reconnect with the earth’s natural energy. Many people find grounding helps reduce stress, improve mood, and cultivate a sense of calm presence.

Try spending 5–10 minutes outside barefoot during the warmer days of early spring.

Spring Journaling

As the earth begins a new cycle, journaling can help you reflect and set intentions for the season ahead.

Consider writing about:

  • What habits or patterns you want to release
  • What new goals or dreams you want to nurture
  • What brings balance and nourishment to your life

Just like planting seeds in a garden, intentions planted in spring can grow beautifully throughout the year.

Embrace the Season of Renewal

Spring reminds us that growth often begins quietly—with small shifts, gentle cleansing, and renewed nourishment.

By working with seasonal herbs like nettle, dandelion, and cleavers, and embracing practices that reconnect us to nature, we can support our bodies and spirits as they transition into the vibrant months ahead.
