May is Mental Health Awareness Month - a time to talk openly about something many people quietly carry every day.

At Florida School of Holistic Health, we believe mental wellness is not separate from physical wellness. The two are constantly speaking to each other, whether we notice it or not.

We also believe holistic practices are not a replacement for professional mental health care. But they can be a meaningful complement - supporting the nervous system, creating space for reflection, and reminding the body what safety and calm feel like.

The Nervous System Remembers Everything

Stress does not just live in the mind. It lives in the body.

Tight shoulders. Shallow breathing. Restless sleep. A racing heart before anything has even happened yet.

Over time, an overstimulated nervous system can leave a person feeling anxious, foggy, disconnected, or simply "on" all the time - even when there is nothing urgent happening in the present moment.

Understanding this mind-body connection is central to holistic health. When we support the nervous system directly, we often create more capacity for emotional regulation, clarity, and resilience.

Holistic Practices That Support Mental Wellness

Across holistic traditions, several practices consistently show up as nervous system allies:

  • Breathwork - Slow, intentional breathing signals safety to the nervous system
  • Yoga and gentle movement - Helps release stored tension and reconnect mind and body
  • Time in nature - Naturally lowers stress response and improves mood
  • Herbal support - Certain herbs have long been used to gently support calm and balance
  • Mindfulness and stillness - Creates space between a stressful thought and an automatic reaction

None of these replace therapy or medical care when it is needed. But together, they can build a supportive foundation underneath it.

Herbs Traditionally Used for Calm & Balance

Herbalism has long explored plants that support the nervous system gently and consistently over time. Some frequently studied herbs include:

  • Lemon balm - Traditionally used to ease tension and support a calm mood
  • Tulsi (Holy Basil) - Known in Ayurvedic tradition as an adaptogen that supports resilience to stress
  • Chamomile - A gentle herb often used to support relaxation and restful sleep
  • Oat straw - Traditionally used to nourish and support an overtaxed nervous system
  • Passionflower - Used to support a quieter, more settled mind

Herbs are not quick fixes. Their value often lies in consistency - small, repeated moments of support that add up over time.

Why Mind-Body Awareness Matters in Holistic Education

At Florida School of Holistic Health, students studying herbalism, yoga, and naturopathy learn to see the body as an interconnected system, not a collection of separate parts.

This means understanding that:

  • Digestive health can influence mood
  • Chronic stress can influence sleep, energy, and immunity
  • Emotional patterns often show up physically before they are consciously recognized

This whole-person lens is part of what makes holistic health practitioners valuable additions to a person's broader wellness support system - working alongside, not instead of, mental health professionals.

A Gentle Reminder This May

If you have been struggling silently, please know that reaching out for support - to a therapist, counselor, doctor, or trusted person - is one of the strongest things you can do.

Holistic practices can be a beautiful complement to that care. They are not a substitute for it.

Supporting Yourself, One Small Practice at a Time

You do not need to overhaul your life to begin supporting your nervous system.

Sometimes it starts with:

  • A cup of chamomile tea before bed
  • Five slow breaths before responding to something stressful
  • A short walk outside
  • A gentle yoga stretch at the end of a long day

Small, consistent choices can help the nervous system remember what calm feels like.
